You may have heard by now that 2021 was an incredible vintage across much of Italy. We’ve touted countless 2021s from the Tuscan Coast to Piedmont and just about everywhere in between. Now it’s time to roll out the hype train for 2021 Brunello di Montalcino.
And, as we often do, we’re starting at the top—with the 98-point 2021 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli.
The Baricci family purchased the Colombaio di Montosoli property in 1955, and Nello Baricci went on to become one of the founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio in 1967. Today, the estate farms five hectares of Brunello vineyards on the celebrated Montosoli hill.
Montosoli’s reputation as one of Montalcino’s great terroirs gained even more momentum in the 1970s, when Altesino began producing its vineyard-designated Montosoli Brunello—helping introduce the idea of a “cru” Brunello di Montalcino.
So, what makes Montosoli so special?
Located on the northern/northeastern side of Montalcino, facing generally toward Siena, Montosoli enjoys a cooler position than many of the warmer vineyards farther south. That distinction matters. Here, Sangiovese can ripen slowly and evenly while retaining the freshness, perfume, structure, and elegance that have made Montosoli one of the most revered names in Brunello.
And in a vintage as exciting as 2021, that combination is particularly compelling.
