Domaine Joseph Roty is a renowned Burgundy producer known for its traditional winemaking techniques and exceptional vineyard holdings in Gevrey-Chambertin. The Charmes Chambertin Tres Veilles Vignes is crafted from some of the oldest vines in the region, contributing to its depth and complexity. This wine is predominantly made from Pinot Noir, showcasing the classic characteristics of the varietal with a rich and layered profile. The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation is celebrated for producing robust and structured wines, and this offering is no exception. It undergoes careful fermentation and aging in French oak barrels, which imparts subtle notes of spice and enhances the wine's elegant tannin structure. The flavor profile is marked by dark cherry, plum, and earthy undertones, with a balanced acidity that makes it a perfect pairing for roasted meats and mushroom dishes.

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru Très Vieilles Vignes has turned out even better than I anticipated, unfurling in the glass with a magical bouquet of cassis, plums and blackberries mingled with dark chocolate, spices, sweet soil tones, licorice and black truffle. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's extraordinarily sumptuous and concentrated, framed by velvety tannins that caress the palate, and underpinned by lively acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish. Pierre-Jean Roty compares it to the 2012 and 2009 renditions, which readers who follow this domaine will know is high praise indeed.
