Old Forester 1910 is an important early example of what we now call double-barreled bourbon, although the original 1910 version happened by accident, rather than being designed as a finishing technique.
In 1910, a fire shut down Old Forester’s bottling line. Mature bourbon that had already been dumped from its original barrels had to be stored somewhere, so it was put back into new charred oak barrels until bottling could resume. That whiskey became known as “Old Fine Whisky.”
Old Forester 1910 recreates a historic technique born when a 1910 fire forced mature whiskey to be stored in a second new charred oak barrel. The extra maturation creates an exceptionally rich, dessert-like bourbon with notes of caramel, dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow, vanilla and charred oak, followed by a smooth, lingering finish.
