Alban Vineyards, located in the Edna Valley of California, is renowned for its pioneering efforts in Rhone varietals in the United States. The Syrah Lorraine is a testament to their dedication to quality and innovation. This wine is crafted from 100% Syrah grapes, showcasing the varietal's depth and complexity. The Edna Valley region, with its cool climate and diverse soils, provides an ideal terroir for Syrah, allowing for a slow ripening process that enhances the grape's natural flavors. The wine undergoes meticulous winemaking techniques, including fermentation in small batches and aging in French oak barrels, which impart subtle notes of spice and vanilla. The flavor profile is rich and robust, with layers of dark fruit, such as blackberry and plum, complemented by hints of pepper and earthy undertones. The tannin structure is firm yet elegant, providing a long and satisfying finish. This Syrah pairs beautifully with hearty dishes like grilled lamb, beef stew, or aged cheeses.

The 2019 Syrah Lorraine is a stunning wine with intense aromas of blackberry, smoked meats, and a touch of floral notes. The palate is full-bodied with a velvety texture and a long, complex finish.

The 2019 Syrah Lorraine is ultra-classic and is about as textbook an example of this cuvée as I can recall. Black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and baking spices all flow to a full-bodied, round, velvety textured, utterly seamless Syrah with ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It's impossible to resist today (and I see no need to delay gratification), yet it will continue to deliver the goods any time over the coming 20-25 years.
