Ojai Description
In our lineup of savory Syrahs, Roll Ranch stands out with its luscious core of fruit. Cool years like 2021 allow the vineyard to pack deeper-hued flavors into the grape, and this bottling impresses with its knockout fragrance of blueberries, black cherry, and all sorts of botanical complexity. There’s a beautiful floral thing with violets and jasmine, plus flecks of dried herbs and spices from the whole clusters. There’s also a subtle brininess that’s rare in young Roll Ranch.
The wine hits the palate with massive impact. It’s round and rich upfront with ripe berry and stone fruit flavors, yet stemmy tannins girdle the richness and impart savory layers of dried sage and nutmeg. In the mid-palate there’s great inner acidity that brings bright red flavors and elegant movement. It tapers out with juiciness that's framed by earthy notes of dark chocolate and peppery herbs. The wine is big and grippy in a way that lends well to enjoying with fatty cuts of meat, but the sense of polish and refinement is hard to miss. This beauty will evolve for decades if stored well.

The 2021 Syrah Roll Ranch Vineyard is terrific, with a deep purple hue as well as a beautiful array of beautiful darker cherries, red plums, pepper, bouquet garni, and hints of violets. It's beautifully textured, medium-bodied, has flawless balance, and fine yet certainly present tannins. It's one of my favorite vintages of this cuvée.

The 2021 Syrah Roll Ranch is a bit more extroverted than the other Ojai Syrahs. It offers a beguiling mix of intense dark blue/purplish fruit intermingled with strong savory, floral and earthy notes. Theis exotic, layered Syrah exudes balance and class.
