This impressive offering is from the French estate of noted wine importer Dan Kravitz, who took the plunge into winemaking with the purchase of 13.5 acres of Grenache vineyards in Roussillon, the so-called French section of Catalonia, shared with Spain. Although the village of Maury was previously known for dessert wines, this bottling uses the new appellation Maury Sec, reserved exclusively for dry wines. The wine is made primarily from old-vine Grenache, whose deep roots extract a firm mineral backbone from the vineyard's schist soils. Syrah and Carignan add pronounced spicy and peppery components to the bold Grenache fruit, yielding a wine that is intense, subtle, and delicious.
The 2019 Maury Sec Serge & Marie is 70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 10% Syrah and is aged in 50% foudre and 50% used barrique between two and ten years old. It's a more serious wine offering ripe kirsch, blackberry, peppery herbs, and obvious minerality in a medium to full-bodied, ripe, silky, textured package. Drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years.
