The 2020 Verdicchio di Matelica Vertis slowly blossoms in the glass with a bouquet of dusty dried flowers, peach skins and sweet smoke. It comes to life more on the palate, ripe in style yet packed full of saline-mineral intensity and juicy acids that create a highly energetic expression. The finish crackles, sizzles, fizzles (yes, all at once), as a salty flourish and a mix of kiwi and lime fade. Wow, this is a thrill-ride Verdicchio; however, it will need some time in the cellar or a good decanting to fully unlock its potential. Could this possibly be better than the 2019? I think so.
